“It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.”

— Said no intellectual property lawyer, ever

nopyright: slang used among a growing group of cool-kid Nashville IP lawyers meaning:

1) no copyright.

2) releasing your copyright, and your right to be right (pro tip: also good marital advice)

3) a backend licensing deal whereby a licensor trusts that a little-known licensee’s dream will pay you more than you ever dreamed

4) a no-strings-attached licensing deal where all payments are made based upon by the Honor system

In the 17th century England, Cardinal Barberini gave sage marriage advice to the Duchess of Modena:

"It is easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission."

It’s often misquoted as:

“It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.”

Cardinal Barberini would never have said this misquote to the Duchess of Modena because it is terrible marital advice—because in marriage, as in intellectual property law, it’s never easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Until now.

You don’t need to ask for forgiveness, because there is a level of consciousness higher than forgiveness—when you see the gain that grew from your pain, you realize the pain was a gift. And there is nothing to forgive.

Don’t forgive, forgift.

forgift: to thank the villains who victimized you for the gifts their pain has given you.
