Why We Write in Secrets, Codes, and Verse
(this version includes clues to our identity)
I hope this message finds you well.
If not, I hope it finds you…
…because if you are not well,
you’ll need this message
that much more.
To You, you brothers U—you sisters, sons and daughters, ¹
The last time,
you read what I wrote,
you said, “You wrote that to hurt me.”
Before that,
You read
and said,
“You wrote that to hurt him.”
“You wrote that to hurt her.”
And so now I write in secret.
Without fear of hurting you, or your judgment hurting me.
It seems silly that my words must encircle the digital globe to reach you mere footsteps away. I used to be more direct. And look where that got us?
Do you remember the day you stopped listening? I convinced a friend to read me and share it with you. At least you read that one. You were moved by the words, until the last ones, when you saw ‘Written by’ with my name below.
And POOF! Gone were all the insights—dispelled by anger, hurt, and shame.
And that is why I write in secret.
I write for you. I always have.
But, you could not see it—would not see it.
you can’t see who I am, until you’re ready to unsee who I was.
I apologize for hurting you. Someday, you’ll listen, read or watch.
And, when you do, I hope this message finds you well.
Love,
Accomplice X
